Chelsea and Man City agree to a £47.5 million deal for Raheem Sterling

  • by

Raheem Sterling is on his way to Chelsea after Manchester City agreed to a deal this week. The Englishman has agreed on personal terms with the West Londoners and would sign a five-year contract with the Blues.

Can Chelsea reenact the successful era enjoyed under Roman Abramovich? The west London club were a mid-level side until the Russian oligarch took it over and pumped plenty of cash. Abramovich turned the side into a top-level club challenging for the biggest trophies. The departure of the Russian who wanted nothing but the best for the club has left Chelsea with massive shoes to fill.

It has not been a smooth beginning to the Todd Boehly era. The American seems to have high taste and wants the same thing as Abramovich. Boehly has taken over transfer activities since his arrival but has found the market a hard nut to crack. Beaming with confidence, Boehly believes the signings will come in due time.

The Blues have been in pursuit of some high-profile targets like Cristiano Ronaldo and Leeds United winger Raphinha with little success. Another high-profile target on their radar is Raheem Sterling, and recent reports suggest the deal is more or less in the bag.

Chelsea agree on a fee with Manchester City

Chelsea have been on the tail of several players to boost their squad and return them to challenging for titles again. Since winning the Champions League, the Blues have failed to hit the heights as they lost the FA Cup and Carling Cup to Liverpool last season. The Blues managed to finish fourth in the Premier League, a feat that is not good enough for the new owners.

In beefing up their squad, Chelsea have agreed to a deal worth £47.5 million with Manchester City for Raheem Sterling. The Athletic understands everything is in place for the conclusion of the transfer. The media outlet also reports that Sterling has already agreed on personal terms with the Blues and would join the west London side on a five-year contract, plus an option to extend it by another year.

All that remains are a few logistics. The Blues are scheduling a medical in London, and if it all goes well, Sterling will join his new teammates in the United States for their pre-season tour.

A new adventure for Sterling

After seven years in Manchester, Sterling is ready for a new adventure. The former Liverpool forward saw his position at Manchester City threatened by the arrivals of Jack Grealish, Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez and sought to find regular playing time.

Sterling has had a few words with Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel concerning life at the club, and reports suggest that the England international is impressed with the vision Tuchel has for the club.

While at City, Sterling scored 131 goals in 339 appearances and was instrumental to the Sky Blues retaining their Premier League title last season. Manchester City will make a little profit on the player they signed from Liverpool seven years ago for £44 million. Sterling won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and three League Cups with Man City.
