Manchester United sign Casemiro in shock transfer window move

  • by

The story of the August transfer window has been written with Manchester United and Real Madrid coming to an agreement over the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Carlos Casemiro to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have not had the best of luck in the 2022/23 summer transfer window. A number of their targets have turned them down while the others have been blocked from moving by their clubs. However, they’ve successfully added Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez to their ranks.

They continue to be linked to a few others including Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong, PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo and AFC Ajax’s Antony. But while those deals are being pursued, the club surprised their fans by being linked to Real Madrid’s midfield destroyer Casemiro and signing him two days after the news broke.

A statement on their official website confirming the momentous signing reads: “Manchester United is delighted to announce that the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Casemiro.

“The transfer is subject to the agreement of personal terms, UK visa requirements and a medical.”

Casemiro, meanwhile, has said goodbye to Real Madrid fans via social media and has also left the club to travel down to Manchester to complete his signing. His message to Madrid fans on his Twitter reads:

“I have lived the most wonderful story that I ever thought. I hope to return one day to what will always be my home. Not in a thousand lifetimes will I be able to give back to Real Madrid and Real Madrid all you have given me. Forever… Hala Madrid!”

The 30-year-old has been one of Real Madrid’s most important players for nearly a decade, forming a strong partnership with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the middle of the park for Madrid.

He made 336 appearances for Los Blancos and has won five UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga titles alongside other titles. However, manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that the midfielder told him he wanted a new challenge at this stage of his career.

Real Madrid have also announced Casemiro’s departure from the club with a statement on their official website which reads: “Real Madrid CF and Manchester United have agreed on the transfer of the player Carlos Henrique Casemiro.

“Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection for Casemiro, a player who is already part of the legend of this club.”

A farewell appearance for Casemiro will happen on Monday August 22 at the club’s grounds before he goes to join his new teammates at Manchester United for the rest of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

He will be reuniting with two of his former Real Madrid teammates in Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.
