UEFA confirm that Russia remains banned from Euro 2024

  • by

Russia will not be a part of the Euro 2024 draws as the ban on them was upheld by CAS. The draws will take place in Frankfurt, Germany, on 9 October.

The heat is on Russia and is biting harder with more sanctions hitting the European nation. Early this year, Russia invaded Ukraine leading to international outrage that led to the rest of Europe and America coming down on the European superpower.

The war is still on, and things are still far from okay. Russia have refused to back down from their stance on Ukraine. Despite support from the rest of Europe, the heat is getting hotter with fears it might escalate to other parts of the world. Russia are up against an arsenal that includes social and economic sanctions.

With the war raging on, several sanctions have been meted against Russia to arm-twist them into backing down from the attack on Ukraine. It has had little or no effect on the Russian stance as they continue to force their position. Russia serves several sporting sanctions, stopping them from participating in international sporting events. The latest is the ratification of the EURO 2024 ban upheld by CAS.

Russia remains banned from Euro 2024

Following the attack on Ukraine by Russia, the European superpower was excommunicated from the international sporting family. Football was the first to react, hitting the aggressor with bans that included non-participation in any UEFA and FIFA-organized competitions.

Russia and its clubs were exempt from being a part of UEFA and FIFA competitions to force them to reconsider its invasion of Ukraine. The bans have yielded little dividends as the war continues to rage. Russia have already seen some teams missing out on several clubs and national team tournaments.

They appealed against the bans at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). They wanted the bans overturned and their teams allowed to participate in the competitions. CAS upheld the decision of the football governing bodies and dismissed the Russian appeal in July.

Russia will not be part of the draws for Euro 2024 to be hosted by Germany. It takes place on 9 October in Frankfurt.

The competitions Russia stands to miss

UEFA decided to kick Russia out of European football on 28 February. The decision by UEFA was made by its executive committee and upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 15 July.

UEFA declared in a statement that Russia would not be part of the European Football Championship 2022-24 qualifying draw.

Other competitions Russia will miss includes the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year. Russia was excluded from the qualifying playoffs that took place in March.

The Russian women’s team was also exempt from the summer European championship, with Portugal replacing them in the competition.

With the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League already underway, Russian clubs are conspicuously missing, with UEFA handing bans to them and cancelling the sponsorship deal with Russian energy giant Gazprom.

The 2022 Champions League final was initially set for St Petersburg but will now be played in Paris.
