Barcelona unceremoniously discharged Luis Suarez. He joined Atletico in 2020 and helped them win La Liga in the same season. The contributions of El Pistolero have not gone unnoticed, and he got a warm farewell on Sunday.

Suarez bids farewell to the Wanda Metropolitano

Veni, Vidi, Vici. He came, he saw, he conquered. Luis Suarez can raise his head high. Kicked out like an old maid and left to pasture, Suarez proved he wasn’t finished and powered Atletico to another league title in 2020.

Good things have a way of ending, and the story is no different for El Pistolero. Atletico Madrid announced that the Uruguayan would leave the club at the end of the season.

Two years was enough for Suarez to write his name into Atletico folklore. The 35-year-old proved that he could hold his own at the elite level. He played his last home game for Los Colchoneros on Sunday in a 1-1 draw against Sevilla.

In tears, Luis Suarez waved goodbye to the Wanda Metropolitano as the fans paid tribute to the Uruguayan and Hector Herrera for their contributions to the cause. Suarez started the game against Sevilla and received a standing ovation from the fans as he came off in the second half.

Thank you and farewell

Atletico showed Suarez love, a love he received not at the Nou Camp. He was emotional and grateful as he delivered a farewell speech in front of the crowd at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Suarez thanked the fans and the club staff for the impressive love shown to him during his stay at the club. He promised them he would never forget the affection he received.

Suarez also thanked his teammates, who made his stay at the club memorable. He said their support pushed him to reciprocate on the pitch by giving 200% to the club for opening its doors to him.

Atletico played a 1-1 draw with Sevilla. The result secured the Andalusians a place in the Champions League next season.

Suarez joined Atletico from Barcelona last season on a free transfer and was instrumental to the Rojiblancos winning La Liga. It was their first league title since 2014. Suarez scored 21 goals in all competitions to help Atletico to the title, including a goal on the final day to clinch the title for the club.
