Tottenham agree loan deal with Barcelona for Clement Lenglet

  • by

Clement Lenglet is about to join Tottenham on a season-long loan deal. Spurs agreed to a deal with Barcelona for the French defender who is ready for a medical.

The purse strings are suddenly loose, and cash spent, a sharp contrast to when a Portuguese manager was at the helm. Tottenham suddenly have ambition and want to challenge for the Premier League. They want to give Manchester City and Liverpool a run for their money.

Following a tepid final run-in by Arsenal, Tottenham sneaked ahead of the Gunners into the top four, cementing a Champions League place. The team suddenly has cojones and wants to make a big impression in the Premier League and the Champions League. When Jose Mourinho was manager, he didn’t get the players he wanted but asked to improve the ones at his disposal. Antonio Conte is a different kettle of fish, and Daniel Levy is pulling out the stops to satisfy the Italian gaffer.

Tottenham have gone on a summer signing spree with a host of players making their way into the north London club. No less than four players have signed at the behest of Antonio Conte. Richarlison joined from Everton, Yves Bissouma (Brighton), Ivan Perisic (Juventus), and Fraser Forster have all joined Tottenham. The latest to sign for Spurs is Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet.

Lenglet to join Spurs on loan

Tottenham have a big season ahead of them. With their return to the Champions League, Spurs want a squad that can compete on all fronts. Under the guidance of Antonio Conte, Tottenham have found a rhythm and are bringing in players that would give the team depth.

Tottenham are close to bringing French defender Clement Lenglet to the Premier League. They have an agreement for Lenglet to join Spurs on a season-long loan move. Everything seems to be in place, and Lenglet will expect to complete a medical within 24 hours. Spurs hope to have the Barcelona defender with the squad in time for their pre-season tour of South Korea. The team is off to South Korea on Saturday evening.

Antonio Conte was keen to sign a left-sided centre-back and had eyes for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. He made an early summer push for the defender but was left frustrated by the player, who was unwilling to leave the Serie A just yet.

Who wants Lenglet?

Lenglet joins Tottenham in a straightforward loan deal. It seems the arrangement that brings the Frenchman to north London is devoid of a buy-back option at the end of the season. It raises the possibility of Spurs making another push for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni next summer.

Barcelona want to trim their squad size and wage bill. The arrival of Andreas Christensen on a free transfer from Chelsea leaves Lenglet surplus to requirements. The French defender had few games for Los Blaugrana last season, and it was a no-brainer to leave when Tottenham came calling.

There are limited spaces at the back for Tottenham, and Lenglet will have to battle for a place in a back-three with Ben Davies, Cristian Romero and Eric Dier as Joe Rodon is to be cut loose by the club permanently.
